Okay, Logan admitted to himself. So he felt guilty. He’d been looking to piss off his parents all those years ago, had deliberately provoked them, but he hadn’t meant for Brady to suffer for it. Hell, over time he’d done his share of turning Jim and Rita’s wrath from Brady onto himself. They weren’t as hard on him as they were on Brady, and it meant less to him than it did to Brady. His brother had still felt some stupid connection to Jim and Rita—after all, they were family. Logan figured he’d lost all faith in that concept sometime before he was five.
But his feeling guilty didn’t absolve Brady. He should have kept his damn mouth shut. He shouldn’t have interfered. Logan hadn’t cared about the impending beating. What was one more in a lifetime of them?
But it hadn’t been just one more. When they were finished with him, Brady had been in and out of consciousness. Logan had half carried, half dragged him to bed, where he’d done his best to stop the bleeding and doctor the injuries. It hadn’t been easy when every touch had made Brady moan, when tears had blurred his vision. When Brady had passed out, for one hellish moment Logan had thought he was dead and he’d decided then that it had to end. Either he would leave or he would kill his parents.
Since Brady wasn’t dead, Logan had opted for leaving. He’d packed what he could carry and he’d walked away without a single regret.
Except that he’d been responsible for Brady’s worst beating ever.
Except that he was leaving his brother behind to be the sole target for Jim’s and Rita’s rage.
Except that his brother had damn near died because of him, and this was the thanks he got.
But, damn Bailey Madison to hell, he didn’t feel guilty for it!
They were on the outskirts of Las Cruces before he realized it. They crossed the Rio Grande, then he exited the interstate and drove a few aimless miles before finally looking Bailey’s way. She hadn’t spoken since they’d gotten back in the car, since she’d made their situation really clear. I’m not doing this for you.
He knew that, damn it, and he didn’t care. The only thing that mattered to him was getting Mac. Nothing about Bailey was important.
Yeah, right.
Though her spine was straight, her chin lifted, she looked comfortable and not at all as if she was pouting. Her legs were crossed, exposing more long, tanned skin than he needed to see, and she was gazing out the window as if the scenery actually interested her. Dark glasses hid her eyes, but her mouth was curved up slightly, as though she was already halfway to a smile and just waiting for a reason to let it form. She looked…
Giving a grim shake of his head, he refused to finish the thought and distracted himself instead. “Where do you want to go?”
That was the reason. She looked at him and the smile damn near blossomed.
